Charlotte (maiden name Moss) Moss, sentenced to ten days in prison was baptised on 24 February 1833 in Ascott. Her sister, Frances Amelia Moss (maiden name Moss), sentenced to seven days with hard labour, was born in the village three years later. Their parents were James and Charlotte (maiden name Hancock) Moss who married in Ascott on 24 October 1825. James was born in Ascott in 1806 and Charlotte in Ramsden in 1804.
Following the death of their mother in 1838 together with her newborn son, Jason, their father married Mary Ann Bayliss in 1840. Charlotte and Amelia had four brothers, George, William, Reuben and Alfred and seven step brothers and sisters from her father’s second marriage.
Charlotte married William Moss on 25 May 1854 in Ascott. William was a railway plate layer and Charlotte worked as a gloveress. They had two children, William and Hannah. Charlotte died in 1904 and was buried in Ascott.
Amelia married George Moss in 1856 in Ascott. He was a farm labourer born in Ascott. Like her sister, Amelia worked at home hand-stitching gloves. They had two daughters, Emily born 1860 in Middlesex and Julia born 1870 in Ascott. The family emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 on the Michael Angelo. Amelia died in 1918 in Wanganui, a year after her husband.
